Today, on May 31, 2018, the Council of Europe and the European Union have officially launched the ROMACTED joint program on “Promoting Good Governance and Roma Empowerment at Local Level”. The program is intended to engage local authorities in creating sustainable policies and actions to enhance local democratic governance and empowerment of local Roma communities.
Deputy Minister of MLGA, Mr. Beqir Fejzullahu on the occasion of launching of this program has welcomed and congratulated the participants emphasizing that “the legislation on local government in Kosovo has established and guaranteed the active participation of communities in public and social life at local level, thus creating the functions and competencies of as defined by law, such as: deputy chairperson of the Municipal Assembly for Communities, the Committee for Communities, Municipal Offices for Communities and Returns, Municipal Units for Human Rights, the Municipal Community Safety Council, the Local Security Committees as well as creating special favorable conditions in the area of finance, respectively allocation of general grant for municipalities and opportunities for obtaining external funds “.
Among other things, Mr. Fejzullahu also noted the care that MLGA has had for all communities in Kosovo, where through the implementation of national strategies for the rights of minority communities, for several years was made the announcement of April, as months of free registration for Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian.
Also in this conference have participated mayors from the eight beneficiary municipalities, respectively Gjakova/Djakovica, Gracanica, South Mitrovica, Lipjan, Fushë Kosovë/Kosovo Polje, Ferizaj/Urosevac, Istog/k and Obiliq, who during the conference expressed their commitment to include the Roma at the local level, signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Council of Europe Office in Pristina.
