MLGA calls on three municipalities to appoint deputy mayors for communities

The Minister of Local Government Administration, Elbert Krasniqi, has issued an official request to the mayors of North Mitrovica, Zvecan, and Zubin Potok, calling on them to take the necessary steps to fulfill legal obligations regarding community representation within local government institutions.

Specifically, the request entails:

🔹The appointment of deputy mayors for communities;

🔹The appointment of deputy chairpersons of the Municipal Assemblies for communities.

These are not matters of institutional discretion, but rather obligations mandated by the legislation in force in the Republic of Kosovo.

It is important to note that municipalities such as Gjakova, Lipjan, Ferizaj, and others—despite having no direct legal obligation for such representation—have fulfilled this requirement through political and institutional will, demonstrating a commitment to inclusiveness and the representation of communities.

On the other hand, it is unacceptable for municipalities that are legally required to do so to have failed to fulfill these obligations.

We as MLGA, will continue to require all municipalities to fully respect and implement local self-government legislation, ensuring representation, inclusiveness, and equal treatment for all citizens and communities.
