The last progress report of the European Commission gave a negative assessment when it comes to the work of the Commission for Languages in Kosovo.
This Working Group will provide clear recommendations for reformation of the Commission and the promotion of the use of languages in Kosovo as well at the central and local levels.
This Working Group is chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Local Government Administration, Mr. Slobodan Petrovic, while the process is being led by the Office for Communities within the Kosovo Prime Minister’s Office which headed by the director, Srdjan Popovic.
The Working Group includes representatives from several ministries, OSCE, ISO, UNDP, U.S. Embassy, Norwegian Embassy, Swiss Embassy and European Commission. The member of the group from the Assembly of Kosovo is the Vice President of the Assembly, Petar Miletic.
“It was ascertained that there is a problem in the use of languages in Kosovo and this is something to be treated seriously. That is the purpose of this working group," has said the Deputy Prime Minister.
He has stressed the importance of preserving the languages of Kosovo and cultural heritage of all who live in Kosovo. According to the plan of the Working Group, the Commission on languages should be reformed. In addition, for the purpose of performing an effective work, the commission should be provided with the budget.
The reform will be finished in 2011. In previous work, the Commission for Languages has carried out a minimum number of complaints, had no permanent staff and has not been treated in accordance with its purpose. The reforms will ensure full operation of the commission.
